Emily Y. Washington to Run for Ward 7 Council Seat

February 10, 2007 · Comments Off

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA — Emily Y. Washington, a resident of Southeast Washington, DC for more than forty years, has announced that she is running for the Ward 7 City Council seat vacated by Vincent Gray last month. Mrs. Washington picked up her ballot petitions from the Board of Elections and Ethics last Tuesday, and her campaign workers have begun to collect the necessary 500 signatures.

Known for a long history of community activism, educational advocacy, and civic engagement, Mrs. Washington is the First Vice Chair of the Ward 7 Democrats, an organization that she, City Council President Vincent Gray, and others have built into one of the strongest, most effective party organizations in the city.

In 1997, Mrs. Washington served on the Emergency Education Board of Trustees for DC Public Schools (DCPS), and she is currently a board member on the DC Education Compact, a collaborative group of educators, public officials, and civic and business leaders working to reform and improve the public school system. For the past two years she has also worked with residents of Wards 7 and 8 and DCPS Superintendent Clifford Janey to establish independent parent resources centers, the first of which will open in February 2007 at Shadd Elementary School.

Mrs. Washington has taught English, language arts, and reading in a number of DCPS schools and she currently works as a literacy coach at Luke C. Moore Academy, an alternative DCPS high school. In 1999, she was the first black woman to be awarded the Olmsted Prize for Excellence in Secondary Teaching from Williams College.

Widely recognized for her work as an educator and as an outspoken advocate for children and families, Mrs. Washington is committed to creating an equitable, accountable public school system and to building a system of integrated programs devoted to adult literacy and job training, since she believes that education is the foundation for true “quality of life,” from which all other social good will follow—quality housing, safe streets, and vibrant, healthy, and prosperous communities. “There is still work to do, if we are to ‘make Seven One,’” Mrs. Washington has said, alluding to Vincent Gray’s 2004 campaign slogan. “I feel a moral imperative to use my position to create a shared vision and to serve all of the residents of Ward 7.”

Parties interested in contacting Mrs. Washington or serving as a volunteer for her campaign may call (202) 543-5456 or email electemilywashington@yahoo.com.
